About Block Captains

Block captains are action-oriented individuals who use their observation, listening, communicating and problem-solving skills to work with their neighbors for the betterment of the community.

How It Works

Block Captains are trained volunteers assigned to act as a point-person for residents of a specific block in Tower Grove East. They exist to connect residents with available resources, coordinate with the other functions of the Tower Grove East Neighborhood Ownership Model (TGENOM), and organize events on their street to help neighbors build relationships. The responsibilities of block captains are diverse but always focused on building connections with people.

A block captain is not a police person, a referee, a final decision maker, or the only responsible neighbor on the block. A block captain is a recruiter, an educator, and an organizer.

Why It Matters

It takes a community to serve the community. Block captains are front-line contacts that serve people in very specific ways and ensure effective coordination across all the functions of the neighborhood organizations. They are active volunteers who are the “hands and feet” of making Tower Grove East a strong community. They recruit people to help with clean-up days, beautification projects, and other events that make our neighborhood such a great place to live, work, and play.
